50-year-old labourer jailed for stealing household items

Akim Oda (E/R), May 1, GNA – A 50-year-old farm labourer who went to a cottage and stole household items valued GHȼ166 of other farmers, has been jailed 24 months in hard labour by a magistrate court at Akim Oda in the Eastern Region.

The trial judge, Mr Albert Owusu Annor, sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment in hard labour on each count, to run consecutively.

Yaw Esianyo pleaded guilty to stealing and having possession of stolen property.

The prosecution said the complainants are farmers who live at Akotikrom near Akim Aduasa, while Esianyo lived at one Opanin Osei's cottage near Akotikrom.

That, recently the complainants started experiencing theft of their home appliances at their various houses and that the Unit Committee was informed.

On April 20, this year at about 16:00 hours one of the complainants, Mr Kwame Budu detected theft of his silver pan and a bowl and reported the matter to the committee members, who suspected Esianyo and when they rushed to his cottage, they retrieved three radio sets, four aluminum pans, two rubber containers and four cutlasses belonging to other farmers.

During interrogation, the convict said he stole the items them around a borehole and not in the complainant's house.
