Three members of the Swagget Keep Fit Club at Suame Marko in Kumasi, perished in a bizarre accident at Yamoransa Junction in the Central Region yesterday, when a Yutong bus they were travelling on hit a high tension electricity pole, and subsequently, hit a stationery vehicle killing the three people on the spot, and injuring several others.
The dead, who have been identified as Kofi Agyemang, Nana Kwame, and a Goil Manager at Makro, have since been deposited at the morgue of the Central Regional Hospital, while those who sustained various degrees of injuries are receiving medical treatment.
According to the Central Regional Hospital Administrator, Adjei Frimpong, two of the accident victims were in critical condition, and were being operated on as at the time of filing the story, adding that he could not rule out amputation.
He further told the press that 53 passengers who sustained various degrees of injury were brought to the hospital early in the morning on Sunday, but two were already dead.
It is not clear the number of passengers on board the Yutong bus, which has the registration number GN 2425-10, but it was observed at the hospital that 56 passengers were on board the bus travelling from Kumasi to Cape Coast, conveying the keep fit club members for excursion at the Cape Coast Castle and Kakum National Park.
Reports say the bus left Kumasi at about 1:00 a.m., and on reaching the Yamoransa township at about 5:00 a.m., was almost involved in an accident, upon which some of the members prevailed on the driver to reduce the speed of the vehicle.
However, the driver did not heed the advice, and on negotiating the Yamoransa Junction to join the main Cape Coast Highway, lost control owing to the speed, and veered off the road.
It then hit an electric pole, subsequently hitting a stationary vehicle killing three people on the spot and injuring several others.
