Veep launches national Policy document on street naming

Kumasi, April 29, GNA- Vice President John Dramani on Saturday gave the assurance that government would fulfil all its political campaign promises for Ghanaians to repose more confidence in the President Mills administration.

“We have fulfilled many of our campaign promises and the launch of the national policy document...here is just one of them and we shall continue to do more to better the lots of Ghanaians,” he added.

Vice President Mahama gave this assurance when he launched the National Policy document and operational guidelines on street naming and property addressing system for Ghana in Kumasi.

The Document was designed by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development in collaboration with the German International Cooperation, United States Agency for International Development, World Bank, European Union among other partners.

It would among other things provide Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies with the policy framework of implementing the street naming and property addressing system, help improve the quality of life in communities and business environment.

The street naming and property addressing system would also facilitate the delivery of services especially mail delivery and location for disasters such as fire outbreaks and flooding.

Ministers of State including; Joe Oteng Adjei Minister of Energy, Sherry Ayitey, Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Mike Hammah, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development were present at the launch.

Vice President Mahama added: “For those of you who do not like paying taxes, street naming exercise will now help the Internal Revenue Service and other revenue generating organisations the opportunity to access all businesses and property that are taxable.”

He cautioned the youth against inflating their ages to enable them to participate in the on-going Biometric Voter Registration exercise, as that had the potential to affect their retirement age.

Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development said the initiative would improve response of emergency services to locations, delivery of services, increase revenue collection and facilitate commercial activities.

He appealed to the assemblies to comply with the national policy directions to enable them to design coherent and acceptable systems.
