STATEMENT ON KENNEDY AGYAPONG’S DECLARATION OF WAR ON EWES AND GAS

26.04.2012 LISTEN
By SIMON AMEGASHIE-VIGLO, VOLTA NDC REGIONAL SECRETARY

Good morning ladies and gentlemen of the print and electronic media. Last week, the MP for Assin North, Hon Kennedy Agyapong, declared war on all Ewes and Gas in Ghana on his Oman FM Station in Accra. This declaration is arguably his redefinition and implied meaning of the 'All die be die' philosophy of the NPP flag bearer, Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo. We have invited you today to enable us make a statement on the declaration.

The declaration of war against Ewes and Gas by a member of the parliament, who is under oath to uphold, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana, is a very serious and an unacceptable deed. By this declaration, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong has broken his oath of a member of parliament. Chapter five of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana, which Hon. Agyapong is on oath to uphold, preserve, protect and defend, has enshrined provisions on fundamental human rights and freedoms.

Article 12 sub-section two (2) states: “Every person in Ghana, whatever his race, place of origin, political opinion, colour, religion, creed or gender, shall be entitled to the fundamental human rights of the individual'. Furthermore, Article 13, sub-section one (1) states: 'No person shall be deprived of his life intentionally, except in the exercise of the execution of a sentence of a court in respect of a criminal offence'.

It is against this background that the NDC in the Volta Region, the home of Ewes in Ghana, finds Hon Agyapong's declaration of genocide on Ewes and Gas as unfortunate, unacceptable and irresponsible. We want to remind Hon Agyapong, and those who think like him, that there are decent and highly respected Ewes in the NPP, who have peacefully co-existed with their Ewe kinsmen and women in the pursuit of their political aspirations.

Ladies and gentlemen of the press, we want to point out that in the execution of the 'evil mandate of exterminating Ewes and Gas', the executioners would not ask whether you are an NPP Ewe or an NDC Ewe. All Ewes would be killed when the executioners of the evil mandate of the modern day Adolph Hitler, commence their business of eliminating Ewes and Gas.

The things that unite us as Ghanaians are far more important than those that divide us. We therefore condemn the declaration of genocide against Ewes and Gas by Hon Kennedy Agyapong, a modern day Adolph Hitler, as an evil mandate and must be condemn by all Ghanaians and the international community as unacceptable and irresponsible. We challenge the leadership of the NPP in Ghana, especially those in the Volta Region to condemn the declaration of genocide against Ewes to alley their fears. We also call on the clergy, civil society organisations, political parties, NGOs, youth and women groups to condemn the call to eliminate Ewes and Gas.

Ladies and gentlemen of the press, Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, once said, 'Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who should have acted, the indifference of those who should have known better and the silence of the voice of justice, when it mattered most, that have allowed evil to triumph'. Hon Kennedy Agyapong has broken his oath of Member of Parliament, and we call upon him to do the most honourable thing under the circumstances, by resigning as a member of parliament for Assin North Constituency. We believe the good and kind-hearted people of Assin North; deserve to be represented in parliament by a more responsible person.

Finally, we call on all Ewes and Gas to exercise restraints in these difficult times of our democratic dispensation and trust that the institutions of state charged with protecting life and property are equal to the task of doing so.

Thank you ladies and gentlemen.
