The National Mamprugu Students Union (NAMAMSU), a student association based in the Upper East region has debunked allegations which attributed that the entire youth of Mamprugu have disowned the New Patriotic Party's running mate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as a total liability and do not deserve to be Nana Akufo Addo Danquah's running mate ahead of the 2012 general elections.
According to them, the Union has not mandated any of its members or executives to issue the Press release which was recently published in some sections of the media which cited Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as incompetence and not fit to become a Vice president of this country, since he has never helped any of the youth from the area as well as contributed to the development of the Mamprugu area including his hometown Kperiga during his tenure in office as the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana.
This was as a result of an earlier statement issued by another group known as the Mamprugu New Patriotic Party (NPP) Youth Caucus of the Wa branch of the University of Development Studies (UDS), which congratulated Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo for nominating an illustrious son of Mamprugu land as his running mate.
This statement which was issued by the NPP branch of the Mamprugu Clan did not auger well for a fellow of NAMAMSU, which led him to ignorantly publish the said unpardonable statement refuting the goodwill message sent to the newly appointed running mate of the once defeated presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party during the 2008 general poll under the pretence of the National Mamprugu Students Union (NAMAMSU) rejecting the nomination of Dr. Bawumia.
In a latest press release issued and jointly signed by the National Mamprugu Students Union's (NAMAMSU) President, Kasimu Uzeiru, Vice President Ibrahim Awalu and Public Relations Officer (PRO) Adongo Charles stated explicitly that the union as a non-partisan has never opted for the position taking by one of their members saying the publication meted against Dr. Bawumia as not credible is rather an unfortunate and urged all to treat it as a 'pinch of salt' as allegedly to have been issued by the executives of NAMAMSU.
“We the National executives solidly declare openly to the hearing of all and sundry that, we have neither given such information to any media for broadcasting or publication, nor giving the mandate to any person or group of persons to publish”.
Below is the full text of the press release issued by the Mamprugu Students Union:
Dated: 25thApril, 2012
NATIONAL MAMPRUGU STUDENTS UNION (NAMAMSU)
This noble union is an entirely students' union, nationally registered and recognized as such, it operates in every public tertiary institutions across the length and breadth of this country, and also, most Senior High Schools in the three northern regions of Ghana. We the executives of the entire National Mamprugu Students Union (NAMAMSU) wish to react to a publication and a press statement one final year student of University for Development Studies: Wa- campus sent to city FM on April 13, 2012 and broadcasted at 6:00am news and Ghana Web. That final year student used the name of the Union to publish his rejoinder de-bunking a statement Mamprugu New Patriotic Party (NPP) youth caucus: Wa-campus published on April 3, 2012 on Ghana web. In their publication they congratulated Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo; the leader of NPP for choosing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia from Mamprugu to partner him to contest political power come December 2012, and also Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; for standing tall among his colleagues and being picked again. Also in their publication they (Mamprugu NPP youth Caucus: Wa- campus) declared their unflinching support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and NPP. This infuriated him (student) hence his disappointment about Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; He claimed that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia does not deserved the support of (NAMAMSU) because, when he was the deputy Governor of Bank of Ghana; under the NPP regime he neither help a single person in Mamprugu nor contributed to the development of his village ( Kperiga). We as executives of the Union (NAMAMSU) are not defending Dr Mahamudu Bawumia or NPP, but sending the press release under NAMAMSU is where we have it tough with him. If he burnt in counteracting the Mamprugu NPP youth Caucus: Wa- campus press release, he should have found a similar political platform such as the NPP youth Caucus WA -campus to use in de-bunking any statement he wishes. In fact he has misbehaved immaturely, selfish, and ignorantly. His ignorance begins here; he does not understand the difference between Mamprugu NPP youth Caucus; Wa- campus and NAMAMSU; Wa -campus. Even if he does understand the difference between the two Unions, and NAMAMSU; Wa- campus had written that congratulatory message declaring their support for Dr. Bawumia, he should have enlighten the local executives of NAMAMSU: Wa campus as a concern and dedicated member of the noble Union, or written to the National executive body of the Union pointing to the violation of the Union's constitution. Also, he should have also known if he a true member that, it's a criminal act for a single member, group of members or any local executives to undertake any activity/activities without the concern of the national executives.
We the National executives solidly declare openly to the hearing of all and sundry that, we have neither given such information to any media for broadcasting or publication, nor giving the mandate to any person or group of persons to publish. Besides that, the Union according to its constitution is non partisan, and therefore should not lean against any political party or be painted by any political color even though each member has the right to belong to his/her political party, and should not use the union as a platform to air his/her political view. Doing so contravenes the constitution of the Union as it is mandatory for each and every member to obey the constitution of the union including both local and the national executives. Such a student has no right what so ever be the case to publish or make a press release under the union's name, because he is not an executive member of the local or the national union.
It is however very unfortunate that such a criminal act has come from our own member, and must be condemn without hesitation, and we wish he comes out publicly and write back to city FM, debunking or retracting his statement, and also render an unqualified apology to the local executives of NAMAMSU UDS; Wa- campus branch and the National executives.
We also wish to enlighten our members and the local executives on various campuses that, any public activity/activities any local branch wishes to undertake require to seek the consent of the national body.
Yours faithfully
Kasimu Uzeiru (President)
Ibrahim Awalu (V. President)
Adongo Charles (P.R.O)
