Accra, April 23, GNA – Acting upon a tip off; the Food and Drugs Board (FDB), on Monday seized a consignment of about 1,000 cartons of unwholesome fish, imported by C & G Company Limited based in Tema.

A statement issued by Mr John Odame-Darkwah, Acting Deputy Chief Executive (Food) said inspection at the C & G facility indicated that the said consignment of fish was being stored under unhygienic conditions.

In addition, it was detected that C & G was indulged in the repackaging of unwholesome fish for placement on the market.

The statement said the consignment of unwholesome fish had been confiscated by the FDB for safe disposal, to protect public health and safety.

"Importers of frozen animal products should note that proper and constant maintenance of the cold chain, as well as hygiene during storage and or transportation of their frozen products are basic requirements to guarantee product wholesomeness."

The FDB will continue its monitoring of the operations of all Bulk Cold Storage Facilities to ensure that they adhere strictly to good cold storage practices.

Furthermore, it wishes to assure the public that it will continue to do all in its power to protect public health and safety.
