MODEC donates emergency boat to Western Naval Command

Sekondi, April 23, GNA –The Western Naval Command of the Ghana Navy last Thursday received a freefall survival boat to be used for emergency services on Ghana's territorial waters.

Commodore Timothy Appiah, Flag Officer commanding the Western Naval Command who received the 100,000 dollar emergency boat from MODEC Ghana Limited noted the crucial role the boat will play in managing safety and security on the country's waters.

The freefall survival boat is a 40-seater emergency service boat which was built by MODEC with additional design work from Team Work Power Boats Limited.

Giving a brief on the country's territorial waters, Commodore Appiah said Ghana's territorial waters spanned across 320 nautical miles from Aflao-Togo through to Newtown-Cote D'ivoire.

Meanwhile, Ghana had an exclusive reserve of 200 nautical miles which, according to the Commodore, abounded in lots of marine resources that needed to be safeguarded.

“The oil find has made the marine zone so busy and needs to be safeguarded, the boat indeed has come at the right time”, Commodore Appiah said.

He alluded to early contributions by the company between 2001 and 2009 in the training of fishermen and naval personnel on the Volta Lake.

Mr. Murali Rajam, West Africa Director of MODEC said the company was committed to contributing to the socio-economic development of the country.

He added that the company had selected some communities in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region to be provided with health care amenities.
