The Asesewa Senior High School last year scored 100 % in the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Most of the students who had very good grades in six or more subjects had been admitted to the universities and other tertiary educational institutions in the country.
The school, the only senior high school in the Upper Manya Krobo District of the Eastern Region and one of the deprived in the region was established in 1983 with very poor infrastructure as a result of which parents were reluctant to send their children there.
The school’s infrastructure however started improving especially from 2005 with the springing up of modern classroom blocks and other facilities.
At the school’s speech and prize-giving day last Saturday (March 17) the Headmaster, Mr Samuel Gyebi Yeboah said the improvement of infrastructure coupled with dedication of the teachers as well as discipline had resulted in the school making progress in academics climaxing it with a 100% pass at the WASSCE in 2001.
The event with the theme “Development of Education in Ghana; The Case of Less Endowed Schools” had a 16 year-old second year student, Miss Gifty Dedo Narh, an ophan who collected prizes in Biology, Physics and Integrated Science emerging as the overall best student.
According to Mr Gyebi Yeboah, the improvement in infrastructure although not the best as well as well as its good academic record over the years had made the school the preferred choice of students not only from the Upper Manya Krobo District but all parts of the country.
That, the headmaster said had increased the student population from 360 in 2005 to 1,786 in 2012 and called for additional facilities to absolve the ever growing number of students.
Mr Gyebi Yeboah expressed his appreciation to the government, the PTA, past students, the Member of Parliament and District Chief Executive for the area, Messrs Stephen Amoanor Quao and Joseph Tetteh Angmor respectively for their assistance to the school.
Other who Mr Gyebi Yeboah commended for assisting the school were the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party parliamentary candidates for the area, Messrs Jeff Kavianu and Moses Tetteh Berimah respectively as well as the Upper Manya Klo Rural Bank which provided a modern building for a library that was inaugurated at the gathering.
Master Eric Nanor, the Senior Prefect thanked the PTA for its assistance and appealed to stakeholders to help solve the acute water problem facing the school.
The Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi said the government was committed to the improvement of infrastructure of less endowed schools and that was why it had put up a 12-unit classroom block valued at GH481,733.62, a three-storey boys dormitory costing GH700,000,00 as well as a GH656,000.00-dining hall.
He said accommodation for teachers was also being tackled and that a modern two-semi detached bungalows were being put up at a cost of GH180,000.00.
Mr Terlabi who praised the students for their academic achievements however cautioned them on negative traits.
Mr Berimah donated 1,000 books covering the various subjects to the school and advised the students to take their studies serious.
A divisional chief of Manya Krobo, Nene Sasraku who represented the Konor, Nene Sakite II expressed the traditional council’s appreciation to the Headmaster for his able leadership that had transformed the school to be one of the best in the Eastern Region.
Some top officials from the headquarters of the Ghana Education Service also spoke at the gathering and advised the students to be serious with their studies.
