19.03.2012 LISTEN

Gomoa Dawurampong (C/R), March 19, GNA – The Gomoa West District Assembly has taken its turn to render accountability to its people under the Assembly in Focus Programme at Dawurampong.

Under the programme, selected metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies give detailed account of their stewardship.

Radio Gold in collaboration with Third Idea Media Consult under the auspices of the Ministry of Local Government Rural Development organizes the programme.

One Assembly from each region is selected to host the programme, and the Gomoa West District Assembly is the third to host it after the Accra Metropolitan Assembly in the Greater Accra Region and Kpando District Assembly in the Volta Region.

Addressing a colourful durbar of chiefs, assembly members and the people, Mr Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah, District Chief Executive, talked about the achievements of the government of President John Evans Atta Mills in every sphere of the economy over the past three years in office.

On electricity, Mr Aidoo-Mensah said about 90 per cent of the communities in the District had been connected to the national electricity grid under the Self-Help Electrification Programme (SHEP).

On agriculture, the DCE said it was the main activity in the District and it employed more than 70 per cent of the working population in farming and fishing.

Mr Aidoo-Mensah said it was not true that programmes initiated by the NPP Government had been left to collapse by the NDC Government.

He cited the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) which had four modules in 2009 when the NDC Government took over with 516 beneficiaries but it had been increased by the Government to 14 modules with 1,464 people benefitting.

Mr Aidoo-Mensah said the health and education sectors were of high priority to the Assembly and said the Assembly and the District Health Directorate were determined to provide basic health services to the door steps of the people.

He said the district had one District Hospital, four health centres, one clinic, 13 Community Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, one Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre and one private maternity home.

He said the CHPS compound had increased from three in 2009 to 13 in 2012 and the Assembly had awarded a contract for construction of another compound at Kyiren-Nkwanta.

The DCE expressed concern about the increase of HIV cases in the District from 299 in 2010 to 378 in 2011 and said the Assembly was working closely with the District Directorate of the Ghana Health service and NGOs to step up anti AIDS Education Campaign.

The DCE said the National Health Insurance Scheme was another legacy of the NPP Administration, which the NDC Government had promoted.

He said 40,000 people in both the Gomoa East and West District had registered with the Scheme as at December 31, 2008 but the number had shot up to 114,275, made up of 34,659 males and 79,616 females, as at 31st December 2011.

He said GH¢ 6,814,894.88 had been paid as claims for clients who received treatment from the 29 service providers.

Mr Aidoo-Mensah said the District had provided 48 school infrastructures for kindergartens, primary, junior high Schools and senior high schools in the past three years and provided eight teachers' quarters to address accommodation problems facing teachers.

He said the District Assembly supplied 2,000 free school uniforms to needy children in 2010 whilst the Government also supplied 4,299 in 2010 and another 4,700 in 2011.

He said 94,811 exercise books were supplied free of charge last year to school children.

The DCE said when the NDC Government took over the administration of the country, only one school in the Gomoa West was enjoying the School Feeding Programme but with the help of Mr Francis Kojo Arthur, Member of Parliament for the area, 25 schools were now enjoying the feeding programme.

Mr Aidoo-Mensah appealed to the people of the District to rally behind the Government for it to implement more projects to enhance their standard of living.

Obirifo Ahunako Ahor Ankobea II, Omanhen of Gomoa Akyempim and Obrempong Nyanfo Krampa IX, Omanhen of Gomoa Ajumako were joint chairmen of the function.
