18.03.2012 LISTEN

The Sunafo North Municipal Director of the NCCE, Philip Kombat has called on all political parties contesting this year's elections especially NPP and NDC to operate within the Political Parties Code of Conduct and the 1992 constitution.

He said even though Articles 55 (3) of the 1992 constitution gives political parties the freedom to participate in shaping the political will of the people, to disseminate information on political ideas, social and economic programmes of national character, they should do that devoid of insults.

Mr. Kombat was speaking at the first quarterly meeting of the Asunafo North Constituency Inter-Party Dialogue Committee at Goaso, in the Brong-Ahafo region.

According to Mr. Kombat, while these rights and freedoms exist for political parties, it is expected that they are exercised within the law and guided by greater commitment in preserving national unity and integrity.

The NCCE Director stressed the need for political parity followers to be educated on the importance of peace in order to maintain peace before, during and after the December elections. Mr. Kombat urged the youth to examine all political messages without emotional attachments. According to him, as citizens and leaders of tomorrow, the youth should show greater sense of discernment and intelligence in the analysis assessment and evaluation of messages that come to them to enable them to make inform choice.

The members of the Inter-Party Dialogue Committee expressed worry that the airwaves have become a platform for odium speech, insults and use of provocative language among other negative expressions.

According to the members, in a developing country like ours, it is essential for the leadership to arouse the population through their words and deeds and not continuously destroying each other's reputations, which only enforces the negative mentality among the citizenry.

The Committee identified radio-phone-in segment and text messages during programmes by some FM Stations as a major challenge that could cause political mayhem.

The Committee said if this situation is allowed to continue without unchecked then some things disastrous could happen and therefore called on National Media Commission to put in place measures to regulate phone-in- programmes.

The members lambasted the two leading political parties in the country, NPP and NDC for unnecessary political arguments thereby inciting political tension.

The Members of the Committee complained that some of the Polling Agents recruited by the political parties are not knowledgeable and always foment troubles at polling stations. They therefore called on all political parties to recruit committed and knowledgeable agents who can satisfy results.

The Asunafo North Municipal Director of the Electoral Commission, Christian Boafo Offeh warned political parties stop busing voters from one electoral area to another to register, saying it is against the electoral laws of Ghana.
