Let's put our differences behind us and move on

Accra, March 18, GNA- President John Evans Atta Mills, seeking re-election in December, has urged loyalists and supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to put any differences behind them and work hard to retain the party in power.

He said the party is in no way in disarray and urged party faithful and fans to remain focused in ensuring the victory of the Party rather than listening to “the cries of the disappointed” in an apparent reference to party opponents.

Speaking at a rally at the Mantse Agbonaa at Jamestown in Accra, President Mills noted that the NDC Government has achieved a lot in the last three years, and the four year after re-election would even be better.

The rally, attended by thousands of enthusiastic followers, wearing party paraphernalia with the NDC's colours of red, green, black and white, set the tone for the many that would be held across the 10 regions of Ghana.

President Mills' arrival was heralded by a 'gargantuan' show of solidarity. Party songs boomed through huge loud speakers and thrilled party loyalists and fans sang their hearts out and danced joyously in anticipation of what the leader of the party had to say.

When he mounted the stage, President Mills, who is almost 68, but very energetic, addressed them in his native Fante tongue. The Tarkwa-born Law Professor hails from Ekumfi Otuam in the Central Region and he has a quarter of century experience in teaching Law.

“Anuanom, me da hom ase; na bere biara, hom mfa ndaase mma Nyankopon;” to wit, “My Brothers and Sisters, I thank you, please give thanks to God always,” said the President, who was Ghana's Vice President from January 1997 to December 2000.

He explained that despite the doubts of skeptics that the NDC would not go beyond six months when it reclaimed power in 2009, it had survived.

President Mills observed that with the help of God, the NDC Government had overcome the challenges at the initial stages of his Administration and had a lot to show.

He said the Government had to make a lot of sacrifices to build a solid foundation and remove the impediments for the success of the economy and ensure improved lives of the people, declaring that, “the next four years are going to be better.”

President Mills called for the electioneering campaign to be achievements-based, and pointed out that, “those who have nothing to show for their existence will resort to insults and lies.” “Let's not waste our time on them.”

President Mills advised Ghanaians to register when the voter register opens on March 24 so that they could exercise their franchise at the elections.

The rally was used to introduce the NDC Parliamentary Candidates and their constituencies for the Greater Accra Region.
