Serwaa Kesse Senior High School, Brong-Ahafo regional champions of the National Independence Debate, was honoured at the regional celebration of the 55 th Independence Day Anniversary held in Sunyani, for emerging the National Champion of the competition held in Accra on March 2, 2012.

Out of the 598 Senior High schools which participated in the National Independence Debate contest, Serwaa Kesse SHS, from Duayaw-Nkwanta in the Tano North District of the Brong-Ahafo Region, emerged the overall winner.

The Deputy Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, Eric Opoku, commended the school for uplifting the image of the region, in terms of education, at the 55 th Birthday celebration of the country. 'Indeed, Serwaa Kesse has made the region proud on this special occasion, and they deserve to be commended,' he added.

Addressing a contingent of 1,458 persons, made up of the security agencies, primary, Junior and Senior High schools, Mr. Eric Opoku raised concerns on the issue of the politics of insults, which, he said, was rearing its ugly head in the body politic of the country.

He said the sordid development of the politics of insult gives reason for one to worry, because it reduces democracy to personality attacks, instead of constructive criticism of policies and programmes of governments.

Mr. Opoku acknowledged the enjoyment of the dispensation of freedom of speech, but reiterated that freedom of speech does not legitimise the practice of insults being hurled at people, especially, those in authority.

He indicated that it was sad to note that the youth are generally the worst culprits, which as well worrying, because the value system and morals of the country are rapidly decaying, to the extent that the young people of today verbally abuse the aged and accomplished statesmen and women in society.

The Deputy Minister, therefore, entreated the youth to rather learn from excellent examples of the older generations.

He reminded the public that governance was not a do or die affair, neither was it a 'win at all cost' game, but about policies, ideas and programmes that must be sold to the good discerning people to make their choices, based on the options.

Mr. Opoku advised the public to reject the politics of violence and mudslinging, as it had the tendency to plunge the country into chaos.

On the March Past results, 3 rd Garrison of the Liberation Barracks won first position, followed by Lawrence Demonstration Primary, whilst the New Dormaa SDA School placed third in the primary category.

The Junior High School category had Ebenezer Presbyterian JHS securing first position, 3 rd Garrison JHS taking second position, and Mitahul Uloom Islamic JHS securing the 3 rd position.

Sunyani Senior High School was the first in the Senior High School category, Twene Amanfo, last year's winners, was this time adjudged second best, whilst St. James Seminary/High School maintained the third position, as they did last year.
