Airtel offers subscribers GH¢ 5 free talk time to register SIMs

Accra, Feb. 28, GNA - Airtel Ghana is offering GH¢ 5 free talk time for on-net calls from February 28 to March 3 to encourage unregistered subscribers to register their SIMs.

Airtel, the fastest growing mobile telecom network in Ghana, said in a statement issued on Tuesday that although it was largely satisfied with the SIM registration exercise, which ends on Saturday, March 3, it was urging its subscribers who were yet to do so to register before the deadline set by the National Communications Authority (NCA).

The Head of Corporate Communications and External Affairs of Airtel Ghana, Mr Donald Gwira, said in the statement that the telecommunication company was happy that a greater chunk of its subscribers had registered their SIMs.

“This notwithstanding, however, Airtel is embarking on a last-ditch sensitization drive to ensure that all subscribers register their SIMs.

Mr. Gwira said: “The tendency is for subscribers to forget that all SIM cards including those in modems and routers, iPads, etc must be registered. The focus for some of our subscribers has been on their mobile or voice lines only and our efforts before March 2 is to aggressively remind them of the need to duly register all other SIM cards they own.”

He advised subscribers to check the registration status of their SIMs by sending a blank text to the short code 400.

Mr Gwira said subscribers could check the registration status of friends and family by texting the number to the short code 400.

He said subscribers with unregistered SIMs may visit any Airtel Ghana shop or authorized retailers with any of the five acceptable national IDs – Voter ID, passport, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), National Identification Authority (NIA) or the driver's licence to register their SIMs or risk deactivation after Saturday March 3, 2012.
