NLA gives to Ankaful Leprosarium

Accra Feb. 28, GNA-The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has presented assorted items valued at GH¢ 5,000 cedis to the Ankaful Leprosarium at Ankaful in the Central Region.

The items include 10 gallons of cooking oil, 10 bags of rice, assorted toiletries and bales of used clothing.

The presentation which formed part of the NLA's corporate social responsibility aimed at putting smiles of the faces of less privileged in society.

Mr George Gyamfi-Osew, Director of Special Projects NLA, said the donation was not going to be a “one day wonder” and pledged NLA continued support to the needy in society.

According to Mr Gyamfi-Osew, NLA realized that the Ministry of Health (MOH) could not alone provide the required needs of the facility and as such needed to fall on other institution for support.

Mr Gyamfi-Osew added his voice to call to the MOH to expedite action in providing additional medical doctors to offer services to the facility and the District Hospital which was currently serving the community.

He indicated that the NLA would soon lend a helping hand to other needy institutions across the country.

Ms Cecilia Duodo, a Superintendent Senior Nurse at the Ankaful Leprosarium, who received the items, said the donation would go a long way in managing in the facility and pleaded with benevolent institutions to come to their aid.

Dr Amankrah Otabir, the Medical Officer in charge of the Hospital, pointed out that leprosy was not as dangerous as people were made to believe in the past because in those days there was no cure.

Dr Otabir said the hospital had adopted new payment system where every sick leper in addition to his normal bills was asked to pay “a repatriation fees” for transporting those who had been cured back home.
