All Nation University introduces case study pedagogy in management education

Koforidua, Feb. 28, GNA - The All Nations University (ANU) College, on Tuesday inaugurated a case study analysis and research centre to enable the university to introduce the use of case study methodology in its business education.

Under an agreement, the university is to collaborate with the Richard Ivey School of Business of the University of Western Ontario, Canada, to have access to the electronic library facility of the school.

The President of ANU, Dr Samuel Donkor, said the University decided to introduce the concept at its business administration faculty to enable it to produce qualified business managers ready for the market and capable of competing at the world market.

He said the complaints of industry in the country were that, the country's universities were not producing graduates to meet the requirements of industry hence its decision to introduce the concept in its training to enable it produce graduates ready for the job market.

Dr Donkor said the ANU was the first tertiary institution in the country to adopt the case study approach to education and pledged the commitment of the management of the university to provide all the necessary resources for establishment of the necessary infrastructural requirements for the effective implementation of the programme.

Professor Haggerty of the University of Western Ontario explained that the concept exposes the students to challenges on the field and equips them with the skills in providing management solutions hence the high demand for graduates from institutions that uses the case study methodology in their education.

She said since cases used in the education of the students were collected from different parts of the globe, it exposed the students to global challenges and enhanced their competitiveness on the global market.

The Dean of the faculty of Business Administration of ANU, Dr Clement Hammah, said Ghanaian institutions did not use the case study approach and often preferred the lecture approach to learning at the tertiary institutions because they lack the necessary infrastructure including libraries for the use of case study approach to learning.

He called for the adoption of the case study approach to enable students in the tertiary institutions to learn how to apply the theories they learn to practical business situations and come out with researches that could help local industries, communities and the national economy to grow.
