ABIDJAN, Côte d'Ivoire, February 28, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Côte d'Ivoire, Bert Koenders, had a meeting on Tuesday 28 February 2012 with the Director General of the UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), Kandeh Yumkella.

At the end of the meeting, Mr. Yumkella, who is on a three-day visit to Côte d'Ivoire, said he had come to consult with the Ivorian Government, on its priorities and how UNIDO could support the national development plan.

« With the SRSG I had the opportunity of him briefing me on the political and security situation in Côte d'Ivoire, » he said. “I also had the opportunity of meeting my colleagues in the country team. They explained to me the development work they are doing. […] We have to see how we support the country team and the SRSG in moving Côte d'Ivoire forward.”

Where security is concerned, the UNODI Director General stated that while pursuing efforts in that area, it was necessary to work on economic development. “We have to work simultaneously on consolidating the peace, establishing democratic institutions and, at the same time, push economic growth,” he said, adding that this was in the interest, not only of Côte d'Ivoire, but also of the region since “Côte d'Ivoire is one of our powerhouses in West Africa.”
