PEMBA, Tanzania, February 24, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- WHY: The tropical worm disease schistosomiasis is the most important parasitic disease after malaria. It is estimated that more than 200 million people are infected worldwide and that around 200,000 die from it each year. In cooperation with the World Health Organization, the German pharmaceutical, chemical and life science company Merck wants to eliminate schistosomiasis in Africa. Merck announced to increase its annual donation of praziquantel tablets, the most effective treatment for schistosomiasis, up to 250 millions. On both of the main islands of Zanzibar good progress in the fight against schistosomiasis has been achieved. During the donation event at the school in Pemba you can get an idea of the donation program and can talk to the officials.
