It seems activists of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have decided to turn all 2012 state functions into political rallies as part of efforts to rally support for the party ahead of the December 7 general elections.

Last Monday, hundreds of NDC activists from the six coastal districts in the Western region virtually turned the commissioning of the four new Naval ships at the Sekondi Naval Base into an NDC rally.

They trooped to the venue for the programme in their numbers, clad in the NDC colours. The Naval ships were being commissioned by President John Evans Atta Mills.

DAILY GUIDE could count as many as 15 Metro Mass Transit buses that were allegedly used to convey the NDC supporters to the venue at the expense of the country's taxpayers.

Reports reaching DAILY GUIDE indicated that supporters of the party in the Evalue area, specifically Axim and Nsein, however refused to attend the programme even when the leaders of the party had provided a bus for their journey.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that the NDC supporters in Evalue refused to attend the commission as a means of registering the bad blood between the MCE of Nzema East, James Ackah Cobbinah and majority of the NDC activists in the area.

The conflict is that Ackah Cobbinah openly supported one Kessie, one of the party's aspiring parliamentary candidates, against his main contender, Isaac Amihere.

The NDC leadership in Axim had no alternative but to offer free T-shirts and GH¢10 each to workers of Zoomlion and ZOIL in the area to travel to Sekondi in their stead.

Immediately the NDC supporters arrived at the Naval Base, they organized themselves into groups and started chanting the party's songs and slogans amid beating of drums.

Some officers of the Sekondi Naval Base had a hectic time controlling the noisy NDC supporters. Some supporters nearly engaged the security personnel in fisticuffs.

The acquisition of the four ships, Ghana Navy Ship (GNS) Blinka, GNS Garinga, GNS Chemle and GNS Ehwor, would help position the Navy to maintain continuous presence at sea.

Commissioning the ships, President Mills remarked, 'Of all the duties I perform as President and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, the moment I cherish the most are moments like this, when we are equipping our service personnel to enable them perform their duties to the best of their abilities'.

He revealed that the Ghana Maritime Authority and the Ministry of Defence were establishing a vessel Traffic Monitoring and Information System (VTMIS) along the entire coast of Ghana.

The President noted that the VTMIS would include coastal radar stations with command and control centres that would enhance the ability to maintain effective surveillance over the country's waters.

Rear Admiral Matthew Quashie, Chief of the Naval Staff, indicated that the safety and security of resources and protection of oil platforms and vessels at sea had been of prime concern to every Ghanaian.

He was therefore delighted that the four ships were being added to the inventory of the Ghana Navy Fleet at such an opportune time.
