Tools Of Success: Desire, Drive and Discipline

Are you after success that brings you lasting fulfillment and satisfaction? Someone has compared life to a school which means there are rules to follow if you are to pass with distinction. Those who adhere to the rules live with a difference but those who ignore the rules inevitably end up with mediocrity.

This article takes a look at the tools of success and how they can be applied to achieve results.

Desire
First you must have a burning desire to succeed before it will become a reality. A desire may be considered to be a strong feeling or intense longing to have or do something. When you desire something, it means that thing is of great value to you. It is something that will bring you happiness, joy, peace and satisfaction if attained. I love what Bible says about desire: “A desire accomplished is sweet to the soul.”

There is a difference between a desire and a wish; a desire has an element of force, it compels the individual to move out of his comfort zone and take action towards achieving what is desired as opposed to a wish which lacks vim and drive. When you desire a thing, you think outside the box, your mind explores how that thing can be achieved. Desire leads to planning and then action.

Every great accomplishment is preceded by desire. Be sure that what you desire is in consonance with your cherished values and beliefs.

Determination
The next tool to consider is drive. By drive we mean the effort one makes to achieve something. It is determination that will decide the outcome of your desires. I love Orison Swett Marden's statement on drive: “You must back up your ambition by your whole nature, by unbounded enthusiasm and a determination to win that knows no failure.”

Determination is good. It is the energizer of life. A determined person does not look back when in pursuit of his goals. They may make mistakes but they don't quit. They learn from their mistakes and get on with life. A determined person knows that he will eventually succeed if he persists. They believe that the power of determination can make them reach their goals no matter the challenges. They are always optimistic. They believe things are possible for them. Look at the success stories of people, who have chalked up success in their chosen fields, they all had the spirit of determination. That is the attitude you should have.

Discipline
You can have the best dreams in this world, without discipline you cannot achieve them. 'You never will be the person you can be if pressure, tension and discipline are taken out of your life.” Says Dr. James G. Bilkey. Discipline encompasses all those habits that contribute to success. It is said, “He who lives without discipline dies without honour.” Without discipline confusion reigns and nothing can be achieved in the midst of chaos and confusion. Honour falls to the achiever not the mediocre performer.

Ask those who have become stars in the field of business, sports, music, academia and what have you; they could never have made it without discipline. A disciplined person focuses on their goals. They are intensely results-oriented. They are always ready to make the necessary sacrifices to reach their goals.

They always give their best efforts to whatever they are doing. Brian Tracy, a success expert wrote, “People create their own success by learning what they need to learn and then by practicing it until they become proficient at it.”

Conclusion
In conclusion, you can achieve success and make a difference by combining desire, drive and discipline. They are essential tools without which you cannot reach your full potential in life. They are the success habits of stars, build them into your life.

See you at the top.
