Gomoa Eshiem (C/R), Feb. 3, GNA – Gomoa West District Chief Executive, Mr Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah, has said the Assembly would base its support for Town/Area Councils in the district on the revenue they generate for the Assembly.

He has therefore appealed to them to be proactive in revenue collection.

Mr Aidoo-Mensah said this when he inaugurated the offices of Gomoa Eshiem Area Council at Gomoa Eshiem. Sixteen communities form the council.

He said Town and Area Councils were potential revenue earners for the assemblies depending on how progressive the Assembly members and the chiefs forming the council were.

He said the councils should identify tourist attractions for the Assembly to develop to woo tourists to the district.

Mr Aidoo-Mensah said the Eshiem Area Council was the first out of the eight Town and Area Councils to have permanent offices and said three others had been awarded on contract for construction whilst that of Apam is to be rehabilitated.

Mr Peter Antwi Boasiako, the District Co-ordinating Director, urged the Councils to bear in mind that they were working under the Assembly and that they must desist from engaging in activities which could undermine the Assembly.

He said special levies must be approved by the Assembly to give it legal backing before collection.

Mr Antwi Boasiako said the Assembly would from time to time cede some revenue to the Councils to collect on its behalf for which 50 percent would be given to the Councils.

Nana Assan, Mankrado of Gomoa Eshiem, appealed for representation of chiefs on the Council and urged the Assembly to educate the people on the need to pay tax.

Mr Anthony Eyiah Quansah, Presiding Member of the Assembly, appealed to chiefs to arrange with their non-resident citizens to come home and register to enable the government to know the population of the area when allocating projects.
