Media urged to help maintain peace in Tamale
Tamale (N/R), Jan. 31, GNA – The Tamale Metropolitan Security Committee has appealed to journalists and media houses operating within its jurisdiction to help maintain peace in the metropolis during the coming elections. Alhaji Haruna Friday, Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive and Chairman of the Security Committee, made the appeal on Tuesday at a meeting with journalists in the metropolis to share ideas on how to avoid violence during the elections.
He said this has become necessary due to the fact that most media houses especially radio stations in the metropolis are owned by politicians who use them to advance their interests.
He added that it was a concern as many media practitioners in the metropolis have not been formally trained, and therefore, put out any information, which tends to inflame passion and create unnecessary tension.
Alhaji Friday said a peaceful environment was necessary for the success of the general election adding that the Security Committee had picked up signals from a group of people with the intention to foment trouble in the metropolis and gave the assurance that the Committee would ensure that peace prevails.
Mr Mahama Saibu, Director of Zaa Radio, appealed to the National Communications Authority to monitor radio stations in the metropolis and sanction erring ones.
He also called on the security agencies to be professional in the discharge of their duties and not yield to the demands of political leaders in government.
