Foreign Minister wins Kumbungu primaries

Kumbungu, (N/R), Jan. 21, GNA- Foreign Minister Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni on Saturday won a keenly contested National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries to represent the Kumbungu Constituency for the 2012 general elections.

He polled 161 votes to beat his closest rival, the incumbent Member of Parliament, Alhaji Imoro Yakubu Kakpagu, who got 133 votes, while a third candidate in the person of Abdulai Zakaria, obtained three votes.

In a reconciliatory speech after the elections, the Foreign Minister urged the people to put the past behind them and forge together to ensure the total victory of the NDC in the 2012 elections.

He said once the delegates had spoken, there was the need for unity and consensus building to promote the supreme interest of the Party which was above any individual's personal ambition.

Alhaji Kakpagu, on his part, pledged to throw his weight behind the Foreign Minister and asked his supporters to rally behind him to ensure victory in Election 2012.

For the Tamale North constituency, Alhaji Abubakari Sumani, the incumbent MP was re-elected as he polled 163 votes to beat his rival Mohammed Abdual Salam who bagged 136 votes.

For the Yendi Constituency, incumbent Iddrissu Baba polled 151 votes to beat Yahuza Gomda who had 144 votes and was thus re-elected to stand for the Party in 2012.

By popular acclamation, Alhaji Iddrissu Haruna, MP for Tamale South, was endorsed for to stand for Election 2012, amid drumming and dancing.
