NASPA DEMANDS BETTER TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM

A section of the national service personnels posted to the Wenchi municipality in the Brong Ahafo region yesterday, January 13, took their turn to the national service farm at Branam to harvest their portion of the over 160 acres plot of maize.

The 34 personnels, both males and females worked vehemently from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm and harvested almost 10 acres plot of maize.

In an interview with their president Honourable Obed Ofori Bangdome (who also doubles as the Brong Ahafo region NASPA president), it became clear that the major problems deterring personnels from the farm were lack of protective clothes, boots, and appropriate means of transportation to the farm.

He said: “As you have experienced yourself majority of them are complaining of itch and irritation. I don't blame them because they did not know there was a national service farm in Wenchi. Some of us who are farmers in our villages did not bring our farming gears to Wenchi.”

He added that: “This morning I was almost 'swallowed up' in the DYNA truck that brought us. You see we are always ready to serve as long as the conditions here are better. We are not asking the authorities for a YUTONG bus but at least we are graduates from universities and poly technics and excuse me to say not some cheap laborers hired from the streets.”

He again stressed that: “If this should continue one day the unthinkable would happen and we shall one day hear on peace fm or joy fm that some group of graduates doing their national service have lost their lives through an avoidable means”. He emphasized that: “The farm project was intended to inculcate in the young graduate the spirit of agriculturalism but rather it is deterring us from agriculture”

He later appealed to the authorities concerned to act quickly before the project loses its aim.
