Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has called for peace as political parties strive for power in elections in 2012.

“I pray that despite the keen competition that may ensue from the politicking, there will be no violence or civil strife and that at the end of it all, Ghana will still remain a country of peace and harmony,” he said.

This was contained in a New Year message signed by the former President's Spokesperson, Mr Frank Agyekum.

The message said “as they come seeking your vote, l urge you not to be taken in by their sweet promises but to critically examine what they say, make an assessment of your present circumstances and see which party could best improve your lot.”

It said as the New Year dawns, Ghanaians must thank God for seeing them through 2011 safely despite the hard times that many people faced.

The message said Ghana today is seen as one of the fastest growing economies in the world but for this to have true meaning for the people, the wealth so generated must reflect in the well-being of all its citizens and not just a few.
