Daboya (N/R), Oct. 31, GNA - Mr David Kanga, Deputy Commissioner of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of Finance and Administration has said the Commission would continue to organize free, transparent and incontrovertible elections to nurture the country's infant democracy and ensure its stability.
He said the Commission had over the years organized successful elections the outcome of which had been acceptable to all, and would ensure that the 2012 election was also conducted in a similar manner, so that “Whoever emerges winner is acceptable by all”.
Mr Kanga said this at a durbar of the chiefs and people of Daboya in the Northern Region at the weekend to officially announce the creation of a new district for the area.
He said the new district which is to be carved out of the West Gonja District, would be known as the North Gonja District, with Daboya as the district capital.
He said with the creation of the new district, the area would now attract the needed resources for its development but reminded the chiefs and elders that this also entailed a lot of responsibility on their part.
Mr Kanga therefore urged the chiefs to foster unity and understanding among the people so that they could mobilize more revenue for the rapid development of the area.
The Wasipewura Anyame Kabasagya II, Paramount Chief of the Wasipe Traditional Area, expressed gratitude to the government for elevating the area to a district status.
He said the traditional area was composed of 52 villages and settlements and comprised three Area Councils, namely Daboya, Lingbinsi and Mankarigu Area Councils.
He appealed to the EC for the creation of an additional area council for the Bawina Zone while Daboya should be upgraded to a town council.
On the development potential of the new district, the Waspewura said he area had a lot of potential in agriculture and supplied about a quarter of the food requirements for Tamale, Techiman, Bolgatanga and other parts of the country.
He said the area could also earn a lot of revenue from sources such as salt production, smock weaving and tourism industry, adding that the creation of the new district would enable the relevant authorities to design strategies that would attract investors into the area.
Mr Adam Muntawakilu, West Gonja District Chief Executive also commended government for the creation of the new district, saying that it would spread resources for the rapid development of the area.
