01.09.2011 Press Release

LET US FOCUS ON RELEVANT ISSUES!

01.09.2011 LISTEN
By UGAG

Unemployed Graduates Association of Ghana (UGAG) is a non partisan organisation which seeks to promote the well-being of all unemployed graduates in Ghana, by bringing our predicament to the doorstep of the powers that be, and to ensure that our life and image is given the needed attention.

We are writing in response to the accusation labeled against us by some so-called “concerned unemployed graduates”, saying that we are politically motivated and as such we should not put any pressure on government to provide solutions to the current unemployment upsurge in the country. This group indeed claims that after reading our press statement which we released on August 24th, 2011, it had come up with the conclusion that our quest is political.

We would first and foremost like to state that we are not surprised to receive such opposition because we have been confronted with such issues from the onset. We also knew that challenges such as this were bound to occur. The question we ask ourselves is, where was this group when we had our previous press releases? When was it formed? We find it indeed amusing that our fellow colleagues who are themselves unemployed will come together and just decide to tell us not to put pressure on government concerning unemployment which is an issue very dear to our hearts. The least we expected from persons who are also going through a similar ordeal was for them to come on board and give constructive suggestions which will help deal with our plight.

In Ghana today we all are witnesses of the widespread politicising of issues, from little ones to very critical ones such as ours. Let us keep in mind that what made developed countries what they are now is their ability to focus on the needs of the people and create tangible and workable policies for the betterment of their citizens. However in a country like Ghana even the price of gari and “pure water” can be seen as political in nature. We are surrounded by graduates who are still jobless after doing what society demands from them, such as acquiring knowledge and skills and passing with good grades. When we sat down to plan business proposals, we could not secure loans from banks, and when we prepared the best of CV's and walked tirelessly from office to office, we had to go back home with promises of being called at the “appropriate time”, something which never materialised. We cannot even look at our parents in the face because we cannot contribute in the livelihood of our various homes. It is due to all these challenges that we decided to come together to see how best this can be resolved.

What we find hilarious is that after all is said and done, these people who raise allegations against us finally agree that unemployment in Ghana is a challenge that needs to be addressed urgently. We as a group have stated that successive governments have all failed us, hence our resolve to ensure that the issue is addressed without further delay. Why then should we waste precious time discussing issues which are baseless and irrelevant? We would like to state quite strongly that we are not relenting on our quest, and we will continue to speak fearlessly until proper solutions and policies are implemented for the betterment of our dear nation.

Long live UGAG, Long Live Ghana.
Signed on behalf of UGAG
