Nduom Moves To Revamp CPP Structures

01.09.2011 LISTEN
By Emmanuel Adu-Gyamerah - Daily Graphic

Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom has embarked on an exercise to reinvigorate the Convention People’s Party (CPP) structures at the lower level with a visit to Madina market in the Abokobi Madina Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.

That, according to him, is the surest way for the party to rediscover its past glory and be considered as a mass party rather than its current image as a party belonging to the past.

Even though Dr Nduom is keeping to his his cards chest as to whether he will contest the party’s presidential primary, the signs are clearly written on the wall that he is poised to win the contest to give him the chance to stand on the ticket of the party for the 2012 elections.

He told the Daily Graphic after interacting with traders in the Madina Market, drivers and officials of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) on Tuesday that the decision as to whether or not he would contest the party’s presidential primary would be known soon.

What is important now is to ensure that the party is on the ground, he said, adding that his current interaction with market women and a cross-section of the people would enable him to know what the electorate was expecting from the party in order to win the 2012 elections.

He told the enthusiastic traders, some of whom abandoned their trading for about two hours to listen to him, that the 2012 elections belonged to the CPP, since both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had not been able to satisfy the socio-economic needs of the people.

“You have tried both the NDC and the NPP without getting what you want. Try the CPP in the 2012 elections and you will not regret. The CPP has a track record and even though it has been out of power for a long time, its achievements are there for all to see,” he stated.

Dr Nduom asked the electorate not to allow politicians to take them for granted with promises they would not be able to fulfil when they were voted into power.

“You should probe by posing the relevant questions in order to know the calibre of people you want to rule the country and vote for them during the 2012 elections,” Dr Nduom advised the electorate.

He said some Ghanaians who voted the NDC into power during the 2008 elections now preferred not to identify themselves with the party, since it had not been able to live up to their expectations.

Dr Nduom stated that the mere formation of an association of unemployed university graduates was an indictment on the current and past governments, adding that it was the duty of the government to create the necessary conditions to create jobs for the graduates.

He said by completely entrusting our economy into the hands of Chinese and Koreans by awarding all contracts to nationals of those countries, the country was denying its young professionals the opportunity to exhibit their talents.

The CPP would ensure that the economy was in the hands of Ghanaians, he said, explaining that Asian countries who were experiencing a boom in their economies achieved such feat by taking their destinies into their own hands.

Dr Nduom said the CPP was committed to implementing a compulsory free education from the kindergarten to the second cycle level, saying that the party would make it unattractive for parents to keep their children of school age at home.

Answering a question on insanitary conditions in cities and towns throughout the country, Dr Nduom stated that until metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives were made accountable to the electorate, the problems would not be solved.

He said if given the mandate, a CPP government would make sure that DCEs were elected to make them accountable to the people and not the President as it was today.

Accompanying Dr Nduom during the interactions with the market women and drivers were the Greater Accra Women’s Organiser of the party, Madam Kate Quaye, and some regional and the Abokobi/Madina Constituency executive members of the party.
