To enable girls to advocate better on issues of gender equality and children's rights using the media, child rights NGO, Plan Ghana, has organised a media training workshop to increase the capacity of some students in the Volta Region.

The media skills training is part of the “Girls Making a Media Project” implemented by Plan Ghana.

For four days, 60 girls and 20 boys from four selected schools in the region received media skills in news writing, broadcasting and photo journalism.

The students are expected to develop newsletters to show how they are putting the skills acquired into good use.

The Child Rights Adviser for Plan Ghana, Joyce Odame told Joy News “….our objective is to let them use it in their various clubs to articulate the concerns of issues affecting girls … as it pertains in their various contexts … so that they'll bring it to the public domain for everybody to know what is going on for people in power to act on them …”

Joy FM's Dzifa Bampoh facilitated the session on news writing while Francis Sasu of GTV engaged the students on TV news casting.

The beneficiary schools were Sogakope Senior high school, Hohoe E.P. Senior high, Dabala Secondary Technical school and Likpe Mate Senior High School.

Sofakope senior high school already is using the skills on their facebook page GMMC : The Eye Media Network SOGASCO. Another 80 girls and boys in the Eastern region will benefit from a similar program next week.

The training ended on 31 August and took place at Sogakope Senior High school.
