Galamsey operators pollute Butere River

Mpohor(W/R),July 30,GNA—The activities of illegal small scale miners popularly called 'galamsey' in the Mpohor Wassa East District of the Western Region has resulted in the pollution of River Butere thereby threatening the health of the people in the area.

The Butere River serves as a source of drinking water for people of Adum Banso,Enyinabrim,Ekutuase,Ateiku and other surrounding communities in the District.

Information gathered by the GNA indicated that, the small scale miners fetched water from the river to wash the mud from the Gold ore and drain back the dirty water into the river.

According to Mpohor Wassa East Deputy District Coordinator, Mr. Mahama Musah Sensau, the Assembly had received report about the operations of the small-scale miners and had contacted the national security agency to investigate and report to the Assembly.

He pledged the Assembly's determination to deal decisively with the galamsey operators when they received full report about their operations.

Mr. Sensau noted that water is essential to human existence and therefore every well-meaning Ghanaian should be concerned about protecting it from pollution.
