Navrongo-Bolgatanga Catholic Diocese gets a Bishop

Bolgatanga, June 29, GNA - Most Reverend Alfred Agyenta was on Wednesday ordained and installed Bishop of the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Catholic Diocese.

Most Reverend Agyenta was elected by Pope Benedict XVI to succeed the late Bishop Lucas Abadamloora who died in December 2009.

The ceremony was performed by Most Reverend Leon Kalenga, Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana with most Reverend Philip Naameh, Metropolitan Arch Bishop of Tamale and Most Reverend Joseph Osei-Bonsu, Bishop of Konongo-Mampong Diocese, as co-consecrators, at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.

Bishop Osei-Bonsu after preaching the sermon on the works and evangelization of Saints Peter and Paul, advised the new Bishop to be a father to all in the diocese, visit them regularly in their parishes, listen to their concerns and needs and be fair to all.

“You are to serve your people in humility and love but be firm. Open your arms and heart to all and let the people feel free to come to you,” he said.

Bishop Osei-Bonsu noted that the Diocese had a lot of potential but needed the hands of all to help develop it and charged Bishop Agyenta to work hard to maintain unity in the church.

He said factionalism and refusing to accept others was not good for the church, “We are all one people in the Church, we are one in Christ, special in the eyes of God and should be in peace with each other all the time,” he said.

He called on the entire Diocese to accept the new Bishop whole heartedly because he was the chosen one, had a good character and would do what is expected of him diligently.

Most Rev Kalenga asked the new Bishop to be at peace with everybody at all times, pray always and not only evangelise the word of God but let it reflect in his life.

Most Rev Adanuty, Vice President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference, on behalf of the Bishops, welcomed the new Bishop to their midst and said, “We will share your joy and pain”.

Bishop Agyenta pledged to be faithful in preaching the gospel of Christ and guide the church in the way of salvation as a devoted father.

He said prayer would guide him and called on the priests to cooperate and support him in his work.

Bishop Agyenta is 52 years old and born in Wiaga in the Upper East Region. He was ordained priest in 1988 and elected Bishop on April 5, 2011 by Pope Benedict XVI.

The Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocese covers the entire Upper East Region and the eastern part of Northern Region.
