Winneba (C/R) June 29, GNA - The Effutu Municipal Assembly is building five school blocks with six classrooms each to help decongest schools that have larger populations.
The schools that are more than 70 per cent complete would also create new schools for areas like Atekyedo, New Winneba, Ansaful and Low Cost communities.
Nii Ephraim, Effutu Municipal Chief Executive, (MCE) announced this at the first session of the fifth Effutu Municipal Assembly meeting, at Winneba, on Monday.
According to the MCE, this would bring to 11 the number of schools the assembly had constructed in the past two years.
The MCE said the assembly had already purchased furniture for the schools and expressed the hope that the facilities would be ready for use by the next academic year.
The MCE said the schools at Ansaful and New Winneba were being constructed under the Millennium Development Authority Schools' Project.
However, in the course of the deliberations, nine assembly members, led by Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin, assembly member for Kojo Beedu South Electoral Area, who described themselves as “the minority”, boycotted the proceedings and walked out of the house.
This was after Mr Afenyo-Markin, who is the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the area, had tabled a motion before the house that no member of the group was elected a chairman of the sub-committees of the Assembly.
Mr Afenyo-Markin said, “If the assembly did not rectify the anomaly, they will continue to boycott proceedings.”
The Presiding Member of the Assembly, the Very Reverend Eldad Bonney, over ruled the motion and reminded the members of the non-partisan character of the assembly.
He appealed to the members not to extend their political affiliations to the assembly and urged those who had grievances to channel them to the Complaints Sub-committee.
Some assembly members told the GNA that the chairmen of the various sub-committees were selected based on competence.
The 16 members who remained in the house continued with the deliberations and approved the supplementary budget for 2011 in aid of some development projects.
