2011 Girls' Camp ends

Accra , April 29, GNA - This year's Girls' Camp ended in Accra with a call on participants to set good examples for their counterparts to emulate.

The camp, organised by the Girl Child Unit of Ghana Education Service (GES), sponsored by Ghana Tap Project, an NGO in collaboration with USAID and Plan Ghana was dubbed: "Inspiring Girls And Rewarding Academic Excellence."

It was attended by 312 girls from communities in the Eastern and Central Regions.

Mrs Matilda Bannerman-Mensah, Director of Girl Child Education Unit of GES, who made the call at the closing ceremony said it was important for the girls to share their experiences and knowledge instilled in them with those who did not get the opportunity to participate in the event.

She noted that the knowledge the participants had acquired on pertinent issues affecting the girl child such as teenage pregnancy, forced marriages, defilement, among other things would equip them to play useful roles in the society.

She urged the girls to be encouraged by what they had learnt, to make efforts to stay in school, and take their studies seriously.

Mr Samuel Paulos, Country Director of Plan Ghana , an NGO told the participants that the only way to help the country was for them to put into action what they had been taught.

Mr Luis Tolley, Representative of USAID said the organisation was interested in the education of children and was glad to partner with stakeholders to promote quality education in the country.

He advised the girls to set goals and work hard to achieve them by applying what they had learnt to every aspect of their lives.
