Elubo (W/R) April 9, GNA — Fire on Friday evening burnt part of the Elubo Market and destroyed items valued at many thousands of Ghana cedis, Nana Frando Bosso Kwesi, an eye witness has reported.

He told the Ghana News Agency at Elubo on Saturday that the fire, which started at about 1700 hours, destroyed items including personal property, footwear, suiting materials, ice chests, many dozens of aluminium cooking utensil and plastic materials in the stores.

He, however, said there were no casualties.
Nana Kwesi said this is the second time in seven months that the area, called Ashanti Town, had been on fire. The first fire occurred on 22 September last year, which also destroyed items valued at thousands of cedis.

He attributed the cause of the fire to some explosive items in one of the some stores.

According to him, at about 1700 hours, some residents in the area detected that smoke was coming from a store at the area but before they could enter, there was an explosion with fire spreading very fast to the nearby stores.

Nana Kwesi said it took fire personnel from the Agona Nkwanta Fire Station, who responded quickly to calls from the town, about an hour to bring the fire which had already destroyed most of stores, under control.

He appealed to the government to equip the Half Assini Fire Station to enable it respond to fire disasters in area.
