Kumasi, March 31, GNA - After two previous elections attempts have ended in a stalemate, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has successfully elected a presiding member after two rounds of voting on Thursday supervised by the Ashanti Regional Office of the Electoral Commission.

Nana Owusu Apeasa II, a 61-year old chief of Adubinsukese in the Afigya-Kwabre District and a government appointee, emerged the winner after a second round of voting.

He stood unopposed after his rival Nana Kofi Senya stepped down as the first round of voting did not produce any clear winner because none of them obtained the mandatory two thirds majority.

He polled 132 out of the 144 ballots cast.
During the first round, Nana Apeasa garnered 93 ballots representing 58.8 per cent whiles Nana Kofi Senya who is also the former presiding member had 48 votes representing 30.0 per cent.

High Court Judge, Her Ladyship Mrs Jennifer Ekua Tagoe swore him into office.

The Presiding member-elect pledged to work hard and collaborate with assembly members and the KMA Chief Executive, to accelerate development in the metropolis.

Dr Kwaku Agyemang Mensah, Ashanti Regional Minister, urged assembly members to rally behind the new Presiding Member and work in unity for the development of the metropolis.
