From March 2011, students who will write the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) can go on the Internet for online exercises in three of the core subjects — Mathematics, Integrated Science and English.

This innovation is being put together by the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) Secretariat with private partnership to improve the grades of students in the core subjects.

The Co-ordinator of the secretariat, Mr Samuel Oppong, in an interview with the Junior Graphic, disclosed that the secretariat had observed that most students did not perform well in the core subjects, resulting in their inability to get placement under the CSSPS.

“There are candidates who obtain Grade One in all the electives but unfortunately get Grade Seven in the core subjects, which affects the placement,” he said.

Mr Oppong explained that most students spent long hours on the Internet, both at home and at Internet cafes, and, therefore, with such online exercises, it was likely that they would try their hands on sample examination questions rather than chat and play throughout their spare time.

Explaining how the online exercises worked, he said students who accessed the website which would be made public by the end of February would have the chance to answer a set of questions which would be marked instantly to make them know how well they had prepared for the upcoming examination.

Mr Oppong admitted that this new exercise might be a challenge to some schools, especially most public schools, since they did not have computers or Internet facilities.
