Privatize refuse collection in Ashaiman - ADC/GDM

Ashaiman, Jan. 30, GNA - The Ashaiman Divisional Council (ADC) and the Ga-Dangme Movement (GDM), have suggested that refuse collection in the Ashaiman Municipality be privatized by the Municipal Assembly.
In a joint Review Statement on the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) issued by the Council and the Movement on Friday, they accused the Assembly of not managing waste effectively in the municipality.
The statement expressed concern about the activities of road contractors in the municipality, and said they had blocked almost all entry and exit points into the municipality, and this had generated discontent among residents.
Similarly, the dusty nature of the roads is another concern to the people," it said.
The statement acknowledged that development projects had their own problems that affected the public, but appealed to the contractors to device means of minimizing these problems.
It commended ASHMA for the development projects it initiated last year and said those projects had resulted in a face-lift of the municipality.
For example, it said in a bid to abolish the shift system in schools within the municipality, the Assembly had constructed a new school complex at Tsui Bleoo Lebanon.
Additionally, at the existing cluster of schools, an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre and a Library had been completed, while an expansion work to provide additional classrooms was underway at the Ashaiman Senior High School.
The Statement said about 530 dual desks had been provided to basic schools, while an additional 1,500 would be supplied by the end of the academic year.
On Health, the two groups said a Ward had been constructed at the Ashaiman Polyclinic, while the Health Director had been properly accommodated.
They also lauded ASHMA for undertaking an expansion work on the main market at Ashaiman, by providing new sheds and a concrete floor.
"In a bid to de-congest the streets, Nii Adjor Market has been constructed and allocated to market women who hitherto were selling on the streets, while a second market is under construction at Afariwaa," the statement said.
It praised the ASHMA for involving identifiable youth groups, tribal heads, and the divisional council in issues relating to private sector participation in development efforts of the municipality
The Council and the Movement concluded by pledging their unflinching support for good policies by ASHMA, but said they would offer constructive criticisms when necessary.
