Farmer jailed for causing death of colleague

A circuit court in Dormaa Ahenkro, has remanded Isaac Esum, a farmer from Asuotiano, into prison custody for two weeks, for allegedly causing the death of a 66 year-old farmer.

The court, presided over by Mr Alexander Osei Tutu, remanded the suspect, to allow his docket to be forwarded to the Attorney-General's Department for advice.

Police Chief Inspector Augustine Duodu told the court that, the suspect and the complainant, now deceased, were farmers and resident at Asuotiano near Wamfie in Dormaa-East district.

He said on January 18 this year, Esum was seen lying under a mango tree in pain and was crying about a problem he has in the leg.

Prosecution said the deceased realizing the suspect was in agony approached him in an attempt to console him, but the suspect rejected the consolation and instead pushed him violently to the ground.

Chief Inspector Duodu told the court that the deceased in the process hit his head against a big stone and sustained multiple head injuries.

He said the deceased was rushed to the Presbyterian Hospital at Dormaa-Ahenkro where he was treated and discharged the same day.

Chief Inspector Duodu added that, the deceased went back to the hospital the following day for a review, due to a severe headache and was referred to Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, where he later died.

The court also sentenced Nasani Kramo, a charcoal burner, to 24 months imprisonment, for stealing a Haojin 125 motor cycle, valued at GHC 1,400 at Abonsrakrom, near Dormaa-Ahenkro.

Inspector Charles Agovi, prosecuting, told the court that, the complainant, a farmer at Abonsrakrom, on January 17 this year, parked his motor bike, with registration number M11AS 38, in his house and retired to bed around 2100 hours.

He said the following day, the complainant noticed that the motor bike was missing and investigations revealed that Kramo had bolted from the town.

"Thinking that the coast was clear after some time, Kramo sneaked back into community but was arrested and handed over to the Police, who later charged him with the offence, after thorough investigation", the prosecutor added.

In a related development, the court sentenced Kwaku Atuahene, a poultry farm labourer at Nkrankwanta, to 12 months imprisonment, for stealing eggs from his employer's farm.

Inspector George Kumah, prosecuting, told the court that, Atuahene parcelled some eggs in a polythene bag and attempted to hide it in a nearby bush, on January 22 this year, but was spotted by a witness.

He said the accused initially denied ownership of the parcel but later admitted he found the parcel in the bush.
