Hasten slowly in passing Right to Information bill – Justice VCRAC Crabbe

Commissioner of the Statute Law Revision Commission, Justice VCRAC Crabbe, has repeated his caution against any rush to pass the Right to Information Bill.

He argues that the country may not be ready for such a legislation because of bad record-keeping in the public sector.

Advocates say a Right to Information Law will make access to public information a matter of right.

There have been various campaigns for a speedy passage of the bill but the retired Supreme Court Judge says the impression that people, especially journalists, will get whatever information they seek after the law is passed, is wrong.

“You cannot get information from a government department when information is not there… so to make the Right to Information [law] work, you must train people to keep records,” he told Ghana Television.
