WHEN DEMOCRACY FAILED, THE NEXT OPTION!!!!
By: Joe Noutoua Wandah

The world watched with keened interest the unfolding events in Tunisian politic for the passed 23 years when a tyrant single handily misrule his country making his major opponents to flee for their dear lives to the extend that the security apparatus was only answerable to him and no one else!

Now that the dark is cast and certainly no return to the usual rudiment of using the security apparatus against the very tax payers of whom the leadership is answerable to being their employer!

The power of democracy laid in the hands of the masses as is unfolding in Tunis with the pressure mounted by the people of which President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali along with his family have to abandon the presidency in fleeing for their dear lives!

The situation that has drag on, for all these years with the then leadership giving it lesser attention was pilling up and now it reaches its zenith from the University student on 17 December 2011 sets himself on fire in Sidi Bouzid over lack of jobs, sparking protests when police seized his goods that he selling!

I am of the opinion that African in the Northern part of the Continent must copy from the Tunisian political bravery call a space a space because leaders in that part of Africa often hide behind religious intolerance to suppressed their kinsmen called it democracy!

The unfolding saga that lead to the popular uprising that the people of Tunisia has been living with for the passed decades plus was of late been catalogue as follows: Man sets himself on fire in Sidi Bouzid over lack of jobs, sparking protests ,24 Dec: Protester shot dead in central Tunisia,28 Dec: Protests spread to Tunis,8-10 Jan: Dozens of deaths reported in crackdown on protests,12 Jan: Interior minister sacked,13 Jan: President Ben Ali promises to step down in 2014,14 Jan: Mr Ben Ali dissolves parliament after new mass rally, then steps down and flees and on 15 Jan: Parliamentary Speaker Foued Mebazaa sworn in as interim president.

When the masses gets tired of the glamour of beauties that the former family and their close associates were living in the midst of abject poverty certainly their angers will definitely be turned on the associates as has been the case in point in Tunis with big time businesses and homes of these people been torched and properties looted!

Similar occurrences has and continue to accompany situation of this nature in almost every part of the World when insurrection happens especially when the people gets tired of their rights been denied and their plights are never address despite their continue protestation!

As a free thinker, who do believed in the right of the person to exist on planet earth I am of the greatest conviction that the people of Ivory Coast must rise up to the task in a non-violence manner and asked former president Laurence Gbagbo to leave in order for total peace and reconciliation to return to the Ivory Coast!

Again with the news emanating from Tunis indicating that the head of Police has arrested the head of Ben Ali's presidential guard, Ali Seriati, and several colleagues over accusations they had plotted against state security is a welcoming one and must grab the attention of every peace loving Tunisian who feel that the former president and his trigger happy confidents were the problem!

Since the practice of democracy is something that are very difficult to write home about in today's Africa especially from the leadership stand point the masses must wake up from their slumbers and non- violently assemble in asking their leadership to give peace a chance and allow sanity to prevail! Yes indeed when democracy failed the next option laid in the hands of the Masses!
