Workshop on climate change ends in Takoradi

Takoradi, Dec.17, GNA - The Co-ordinator of the General Agricultural Workers Union, Mr Karim Saagbul, has said that Ghanaians need to plant more trees and grow temperature resistance crops to minimise the effect of climate change.

Mr Saagbul said if nothing was done to reverse the effects of climate change it would result in low crop yields and famine.

He made this observation at workshop on climate change and the right to food in Ghana.

It was organised by the General Agricultural Workers Union and the Action Aid-Ghana in Takoradi on the theme: "The concept and status of the right to food in Ghana."

The participants were drawn from Ghana Rubber Estates Limited, Benso Oil Palm Plantation, Norpam Oil Company, Forestry Services, Oyem Oil Limited and Cocoa Services Division.

Mr Saagbul said climate change would bring about serious global instability and thus demanded urgent local and global response.

He cited some of the effects of climate change as rise in temperature, erratic rainfall pattern, frequent flooding, excessive drought and unpredictable weather pattern.

He said the amount of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane in the atmosphere had increased over the years thereby affecting the current climatic outlay.
