The Convention People’s Party has noted with regret, the events in Côte d’Ivoire that threaten to derail and thwart the gallant and heroic efforts of the people of that nation to achieve democracy, good governance, national and regional integration.

‘Consistent with the CPP’s principle of self-determination, we insist on upholding the rule of law and respecting the wishes of the brotherly Ivorian people as demonstrated in the voting results certified by the independent Electoral Commission’, it said in a press statement.

The CPP called on all countries to refrain from any form of interference in the people of Côte d’Ivoire’s fervent search for democracy; to guarantee that the government that emerged would reflect the will of the Ivorian people in these critical times.

“We endorse the positions taken by the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on the developments in that country, and urge that no effort is spared to bring the situation to normalcy,” it stated.

The party said, it looked forward with hope that Côte d’Ivoire would overcome the challenges of these difficult times and emerge strengthened and united in the struggle for national and continental development.
