USAID Contribution to Ghana's Food Security

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has provided $3.9 million to the people of Ghana through the World Food Programme's Protracted Relief and Recovery Operation. The funding will benefit106,000 Ghanaians through nutritional food interventions, food for work, food for training, and income generating activities. The principal beneficiaries include malnourished children, pregnant women and nursing mothers, and people living with HIV and their families in the three Northern regions.

The grant will be used to buy competitively-priced food commodities in Ghana as available, under WFP's Purchase for Progress (P4P) initiative. P4P aims to boost food production and stimulate markets for smallholder farmers.

“Several people have not been able to rebuild the lives they lost after being struck by three successive crises,” said Ismail Omer, WFP Representative in Ghana. “The USAID contribution will help WFP provide a safety-net of nutritious support to some of the poorest and most vulnerable women and children, for some time.”

“We are pleased to contribute to the WFP's Protracted Relief and Recovery Operationprogram,” said Cheryl Anderson, Mission Director of USAID Ghana. “We are committed to working with other development organizations to support Ghana to strengthen food security and meet the poverty and hunger Millennium Development Goals.”

USAID implements the U.S. Government's economic and technical assistance programs in developing countries, and works with other governments, multilateral institutions, NGOs, and private companies to reduce global hunger and poverty. WFP is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. In 2010, WFP aims to feed 90 million people in 73 countries.
