The Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Kwadwo Afari- Gyan says the commission will be compelled to postpone the district assembly elections if there are further delays in the release of funds.

Funds for the commission’s activities are released in tranches by the government. Speaking to an Accra FM station in Accra yesterday, Dr Afari-Gyan said the EC could not organise the district assembly elections scheduled for December 28 without the release of the next tranche of funds by the government.

“We’ve made the arrangement from the very beginning of the year, the money to pay those people who will do the elections, we don’t need now because we will pay them after they’ve done the elections.

What we need now, now that we’ve taken nominations, will be mobilisaion money to pay the printers.”

Dr Afari-Gyan said people who were engaged to do limited voter registration exercise did not receive their money in time because the government delayed in releasing money to the EC.

The EC Chairman said he was hopeful the funds would be released on time to avoid the problems that characterised the opening of the voters register this year.
