The zone III schools Games competition of the Greater Accra Second Cycle Schools ended last Thursday with a spectacular ceremony amidst mixed feelings among participants at the El-Wak Sports stadium in Accra.

Ashaiman Senior High school Tema Technical Institute proudly burst the bubble of the traditional names like the PRESECs and the Achimotas when they emerged the overall best Girls and Boys team respectively to lift the much sought after gold trophies.

They were followed closely by Presbyterian Senior High School -Tema who placed second when they took the first position in the Boys soccer and The Girls' Table Tennis, out of the 10 participating school, obviously qualifying the second overall best team.

The three- day long event saw students from 10 schools in the zone competing in football, handball, and volleyball table tennis. Schools in this zone include Achimota High, Amasaman Senior High Technical, Armed Forces Senior Technical, Ashaiman Senior High and Ghanatta Senior High school. The rest are Presbyterian Boys senior High-Legon, Presbyterian Senior High-Tema, St. John's Grammar and Tema Technical Institute.

Prior to the finals , the chairman of the zone Lt. Col. E.B. Ashirifi told the TIMELINE in an interview that the Games is aimed at unearthing talents in the students since as teachers, they have the responsibility to do so. On his expectations, Col. Ashirifi who is also the headmaster of the Armed Forces Secondary Technical School said he would like the lesser known schools emerge winners so as to break the “ old order of the big names like PRESEC Boys and Achimota who always have upper hand in these instances “ he said.

Game officials and teachers worked around the clock to ensure smooth running of events in exception of few lapses. Policemen were also deployed to the stadium to ensure security and also to maintain law and order.

Zonal Secretary and Head of Physical Education at the Tema Technical Institute, Henry Nii Sackey told the TIMELINE that best players in all disciplines from the various schools will be selected to represent the zone in the super zonals competition which comes forth next Tuesday, November, 30thalso at the El-Wak sports stadium.

Attendance was impressive as players were cheered by vociferous fans from their schools which boosted their morale to press on for the gold. The event which was characterised with other activities like music and dance saw students dancing their hearts out to music playing at the events ground to clearly indicate that they definitely need a break from long hours in the classroom and the library.

In his closing remarks, headmaster of Ghanatta Senior High School, described the event as “exciting and competitive” urged the players not to rest on their oars but to pursue higher heights adding that “the sky is your limit”

He commended the schools, P.E masters and all officials for the good work done and hoped that the zone will put up a good performance in the on coming super zonals.
