POTAG calls for extension in academic calendar

The teachers on Saturday, November 13, suspended the strike after holding an emergency congress in Koforidua in the Eastern Region.

According to the teachers, they have only suspended their strike and may resume if the National Labour Commission (NLC) fails to be begin negotiations to address their concerns.

On Friday November 12, an Accra Fast Track High Court ruled to declare the strike by the Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana (POTAG) legal and directed that the National Labour Commission appoints a mediator to address the concerns of the teachers.

The court also appealed to the teachers to consider calling off their strike in the interest of the students.

The teachers have thus resolved to start teaching on Monday November 15, but are appealing to rectors of the Polytechnics to adjust their academic calendars.

'We have not called off the strike. We have suspended the strike. Per the Court ruling, we believe that Labour Commission will find a mediator and negotiations will begin. But for the students management will have to strike the number of days that we were absent from the lecture rooms so that it is added to the academic calendar so virtually the academic calendar will change.'
