Students urged to respect authority - Prof Sobotie

Kumasi, Oct. 30, GNA - Professor Steve Sobotie, President of the Garden City University College, in Kumasi has advised students to imbibe in themselves strong moral principles such as hard work, honesty and respect for authority.

He also encouraged students to desist from laziness, cheating during examinations. Discipline, he added, must be their hallmark.

Professor Sobotie gave the advice in Kumasi on Saturday at the matriculation ceremony for 607 new students of the Christian Service University College (CSUC).

The President of the Garden City College spoke under the theme "Excellence with Integrity."

He charged students not to foment trouble but strive for peace always by using dialogue to address their grievances.

Professor Sobotie said to ensure academic excellence private institutions must set high standards in addition to subjecting themselves to the standards of monitoring and affiliated bodies as well as the National Accreditation Board.

He congratulated CSUC for being part of the private sector participation in the provision of tertiary education, which meets the current knowledge-based economy and globalisation.

Professor Sobotie commended the private sector for playing a vital role in the country's educational development by absorbing a large number of qualified students demanding tertiary education.

"It is worth mentioning that some of our private institutions offer research and job related programmes, which are tailored to self-reliance concept long before graduation," he noted.

Professor Emmanuel Frempong, President of CSUC said out of the 1,032 applicants, only 607 were admitted with 40 percent being females, to offer courses in Communication Studies, Computer Science, Theology and Business Administration.

He charged them to adhere to the rules and regulations of the Institution to avoid any acts of omission and commission.

Mrs Joyce Ama Quartey, the Dean of Students called on the matriculants to take advantage of the academic opportunities and also be morally upright in order to contribute meaningfully to the society.
