The office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice has ordered criminal investigations into the conduct of officials and staff of the Osu Children's Home orphanage, Myjoyonline.com has learnt.

A source within Mrs Betty Mould-Iddrisu's office told Myjoyonline.com that the Justice Minister was “disgusted and outraged” after watching an undercover footage of the criminal abuse of the inmates by their supposed 'caregivers' and want the incident investigated for immediate action.

The investigation is aimed at the criminal prosecution of culpable officials, according to the source.

The footage, an investigative piece by ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas of the New Crusading Guide, chronicles the untold hardships inmates of hitherto Ghana's flagship orphanage which is supervised by the Employment and Social Welfare Ministry go through routinely.

Not only are inmates regularly subjected to physical abuse, they are also mostly denied the benefit of various donations handed the home by philanthropist groups, individuals and sometimes state institutions as well as corporate bodies.

The chilling revelations have become topical instantly since hitting the public Wednesday, raising questions about the quality of staff and the propriety of their motivations in offering to provide hope for some of the helpless and sometimes hopeless of the society.

In the footage, staff of the home are seen regularly sharing gifts and donations meant for inmates among themselves and carting them to their homes, while an interesting episode is captured of a retired staff of the home returning to complain to her other former colleagues still at post that she was no longer getting her regular supplies. A young inmate who stole a bottle of Coca-Cola was locked away from his colleagues for a month, and weeding is a regular “punishment” for truant inmates.

Copies of the footage are to air on various television networks shortly, including Multi TV.
