A national Mathematics Roadshow aimed at sensitising students and teachers to the importance of Mathematics is to be held in October this year.

The event will be organised by Megasa Mathematics Academy, in collaboration with the Ghana Mathematics Society.

'It will be held in the regional capitals and it will be one day in each regional capital.

We would tell the participants that everybody can do Mathematics, the Founder and Executive Director of Megasa Mathematics Academy, Prof. Sitsofe E. Anku said at the closing ceremony of the first National Mathematics Camp for selected primary, junior and senior high school students.

Five students from the primary, junior high and senior high school levels from each region attended the one-month camp. Also in attendance were three teachers from each region.

It was on the theme: “Understanding and Appreciating Mathematics”.

At the camp teachers learnt how to teach Mathematics based on the philosophy that children have different learning needs, and so should be attended to individually.

Pupils learnt how to study Mathematics on their own with the assistance of their teachers, among other things.

The pupils also embarked on educational trips to expose them to have first hand experience in subject areas such as Science and Social Studies.

Prof. Anku said the challenges included accommodation for students and teachers, adding that they would also need a bus to move the students around.

Another concern, he said, was how to monitor the students who had taken part in the camp.

He said a website would be created to provide the platform for students and teachers to exchange ideas, adding that the Kofi Annan ICT Centre had indicated its willingness to help in that direction.

Prof. Anku called for support from corporate organisations to support educational activities geared towards improving the standard of education in the country.

According to the participants, the Mathematics Camp had “broadened our horizon and enlightened us to have a better understanding of Mathematics”.

“We also learnt new skills in acquiring knowledge. Our experience was quite exciting,” they said in their report, and thanked the facilitators, teachers and staff of the Megsa Academy.

The students said during the camp, “every day students were given assignments to do, while the teachers went round to supervise, helped and encouraged us when we were finding difficulties”.

“New things were learnt all the time.

For example, the students were able to discover some new formulas practically by simply using shapes made from cardboard.

Aside, we visited the Ghana Planetarium at Osu where we were educated about the planet”.

They said the camp was very educative and served as a foundation for learning Mathematics and other subjects.
