NGO supports women to establish small businesses

Obuasi, July 30, GNA - A non-governmental organisation is assisting Women in the Obuasi municipality to establish small businesses under the Subayo Obuasi Women Project.

The project is offering small micro loans of US$100 each to the women and was set up by Subayo Foundation, an American NGO and three members from the Riverside Sister City Committee, Dr Ora Robinson, Cate Whitmore and Babara Rya.

The Founder and President of the Foundation, Ms Mounwae Suba-Smith, said its vision was to empower women from Ghana and Zambia through business education, training, literacy programmes, HIV-AIDS and pre-natal health education.

Making the presentation of the cash to some of the beneficiaries on behalf of the foundation, Mr John Alexander Ackon, the Municipal Chief Executive, said the government alone could not shoulder the responsibility of creating jobs and that was why it appreciated private partnership.

He advised the women to make judicious use of the loans so that they could generate profit out of it.

"This is small loans that you will have to pay back with no interest and therefore invest it in a lucrative trade that you can derive profit out of".

Mr Ackon said he was grateful to the Foundation for helping to create employment opportunities for the women.

Albert Nana Asante, one of the National Coordinators of the Foundation, told the beneficiaries that the way they handled the credit facility would enable more others to benefit".

"I want you to put this loan into useful venture that will encourage the foundation to extend the credit to other women", he said.

He commended the MCE for the support he was providing Foundation and pledged to collaborate effectively with the municipal assembly to create jobs for the vulnerable in the society.

Mrs Mary Darkwa, one of the beneficiaries thanked the Foundation and gave the assurance that they would put the money to good use.
