An aspiring 2nd vice chairman of the Brong Ahafo Region branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Kwadwo Takyi, has described the leadership of the party in the region as bogus and ineffective.

According to Nana Takyi, who is a businessman, the entire regional executive of the Brong Ahafo branch has woefully failed the members and supporters.

In an exclusive interview with the Chronicle yesterday, Nana Takyi complained that the executives are not able to explain government policies to the electorate, but rather resort to infighting.

He accused the Brong Ahafo Regional leadership of the party of turning its back on its foot soldiers.

He warned that if care is not taken, the 2004 general elections might be disastrous for the NPP, if the situation continues the way it is.

According to him, the Brong Ahafo branch of NPP had played a pivotal role in ensuring victory for the party in 2000 elections.

Nana Takyi, alias 'Top Class,' called for a total overhaul of the current leadership, adding that without a positive change in the leadership it would be impossible to end the spate of rivalries and bickering that has engulfed the rank and file of the party.

According to the 2nd vice chairman aspirant, many party members have lost confidence in the regional leadership, and have therefore threatened to quit the party if the present leadership is retained at the forthcoming regional congress schedule for this weekend.

Nana Takyi, told this reporter that many foot soldiers of the party are no longer interested in the party's activities, due to lack of recognition . The say they are not prepared to sacrifice for the party as they did during the 2000 elections.

Nana Takyi said since he established his business, he has never gone in for any bank loan, adding that NPP had made him to contract a huge loan from the bank.

He warned that the party would get shocking results in the 2004 elections, if the leadership should sit down and behave like the ostrich that buries its head in the sand and pretends that all is well.

He observed that the 2004 elections would be a serious battle for the NPP, taking cognizance of how the main opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC) is marshalling resources to give the party a stiffer challenge.

Nana Takyi added that the NDC knows for sure that sustaining the party till 2008 may not be possible and therefore they would move heaven and earth to recapture power in 2004 general elections.

The NPP stalwart noted in frank terms that even though the NPP government has embarked on a lot of infrastructural development, the real needs of the people are affordable health care and education.

He said it is true that the government cannot achieve all these things within this short period as it inherited empty coffers from NDC government. He added that there is the need to explain such hindrances to the people for them to understand problems at hand.

Nana Takyi regretted that incumbent leadership of the party had been is giving false impression to the President that there is no problem in the region, meanwhile the party is facing a very big crisis.

Nana Takyi, blamed this on what he termed "the absence of propaganda machinery" in the party, which has enabled the NDC to succeed in their "campaign of lies and deception in the rural communities."
